Unfinished Song (Song for Marion)

★★★

Hollywood has its’ pattern. Introduce a new topic to a unknown audience. It if is a hit, make more similar ones quickly. Sell. Sell. Sell. We all loved “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and “The Quartet.” They were fresh, funny, heartbreaking and well-acted. Enter “Unfinished Song.”

Yes, “Unfinished Song” has two prominent actors: Vanessa Redgrave, whose dying character, Marion, is trying to prepare her husband for that inevitability, and Terrence Stamp (Arthur, her husband) who has grown into a dour old guy, content to be with his wife only. Marion belongs to a senior singing group led by Brinda (Anne Reid). At times, this is a touching story of how close two people who have been married a Millennium can become, how torturous it is to lose that partner, and the struggle to pick up the pieces and continue. Acting is well- delivered. Even so, I felt it was part of a cluster of “old people’s” stories motivated by the aforementioned two hits and marketed to an aging baby boomer audience. The ending may be a tear-jerker for some but to me it was sloppy, sentimental and predictable. Young Anne Reid shines through the whole movie and adds the warmth, caring and tutorage that Arthur needs. We are bound to see more of her in the future.★★★
